Theme: 'Grace Dieu Medieval Mills and Bridges and old Routeways'

ESTUARY STROLL

I stroll along by waters edge
My footprints left on frosted grass.
This morning from the classic mould
The hand of genius I behold
Natures five card trick is played

Dry, clear, calm, sunny, cold.
Brent geese uneasy, eye my walking stick.
Their journey south has thought them well
Lead shot has crossed their flanks too oft,
To trust this Homo Sapien

With scope in hand
To bring them close I spy
Great crested grebe, pochard,
Red breasted merganser,
Cormorant, golden eye

Sub aqua treats an antidote
For a sad December sky.
And high above a 3D synchronized display
Bestows on me an inner calm
I look in awe at plovers
Gold, Green and Grey.

And then the Monarch over all slips by
This connoisseur of baker’s bread
The Mute swan, majestic, head proud high.
Embalmed in calm I turn and walk away
Sweet memories now fresh frozen
My sustenance for that sodden day.
